If there’s one thing Europeans know how to do well, it’s putting on a show. Thousands of different regional and national festivals take place across the continent each year, with everything from carnivals to Christmas celebrations. As we wave goodbye to 2018, take a look at some of the best 2019 events in Europe that deserve a spot in your diary.
St Patrick’s Day in Ireland: 17 March 2019
St. Patrick’s Day is something of a worldwide phenomenon – where it’s often said that on this day in March, everyone is Irish. So where better to celebrate than in Ireland itself? Almost all of the country’s major cities take part in their own unique way, with each area priding itself on its pageantry.
Some of the most popular places to spend St Patrick’s Day in Ireland include Dublin, Galway and Cork. Wherever you go though, you’re sure to have a brilliant time. Just don’t leave without trying some of Ireland’s best-loved cuisine, including soda bread, Irish Stew, Guinness and Colcannon (also known as Champ, which is essentially delicious mashed potato with either cabbage or spring onions.)
Tour de France: 6 – 28 July 2019
One of the best 2019 events in Europe for sports fans, the Tour de France is one of the world’s most popular sporting events. And there’s really nothing quite like experiencing the awe-inspiring atmosphere for yourself. Getting a good view of the action is actually much easier than you might think, with the 3329 km route providing plenty of opportunities for good viewing points.
The heart of Paris is always packed for the final stage on 28 July, so be sure to arrive in good time to get a view. With the Avenue des Champs-Élysées often full with crowds, late risers (or those who prefer a less-frenetic atmosphere) should head to Rue de Rivoli, where you’ll be able to see the riders pass through several times from both vantage points. Book a ferry from Dover to Calais to be part of the action.
Oktoberfest in Munich: 19 September 2019
One of the world’s largest folk festivals, the beloved Oktoberfest 2019 starts on 19 September, kicking off with an almighty parade before the tapping of the first keg. The event lasts for just over two weeks – giving you plenty of time to discover all that Munich has to offer while you’re there.
A great way to feel like a local in Munich is to head to one of the city’s famous beer halls. Essentially a large pub with a speciality in beer, many breweries in the city have their own space for you to eat, drink and be merry. Much of their cuisine is iconic – bagels are bigger and doughier than their American counterpart and often come accompanied with veal sausages – another local speciality. For something a bit sweeter, Apfelstrudel is one of Germany’s most loved desserts, made up of paper-thin dough layered with crisp apple chunks.
Europe’s Christmas Markets – From November 2019
One of the best 2019 events in Europe that you can head to is during a pre-Christmas escape. Indeed, is there anything that will get you in the festive spirit as much as a traditional Christmas market? Taking place all across Europe, what could be better than wandering down historical streets accompanied by a warming mug of gluhwein (mulled wine)? You’ll find yourself falling in love with the season all over again.
Some of the best Christmas markets in Europe include Bruges, which is transformed into a magical wonderland when the festive season descends. Other favourites include Cologne, Brussels and Berlin.
