Located just a few minutes from Calais port by car, there are plenty of things to do on Calais beach no matter what time of year you visit, or who you’re travelling with. Here, we share some of our favourite options which we hope will inspire you the next time you sail across the Channel on one of our ferries to France.
1. Calais beach walks
Due to its wide stretch of sand, Calais beach offers the perfect place to wander while taking in the sea views. As long as you’re dressed for the weather, wintery beach walks can be very rejuvenating and are sure to refresh you should you be suffering with the winter blues. During the summer, there’s no better place to take a sunny stroll, and children can run free as you’ll be able to keep an eye on them as they race along the flat beach.
2. Watch the ferries
Not that we’re biased, but watching the ferries come in and out of the port as you relax on the sand is a great way to pass the time. There is something quite therapeutic about spotting ships sailing by, and on a clear day you’ll be able to see the dramatic White Cliffs of Dover in the background too (not that you want to be reminded of home while on holiday). If you take a snap of one of our Dover to Calais ships, don’t forget to share it on Instagram with #poviews – we love seeing your ferry photos!
3. Calais beach activities for kids
If you’re travelling with children, they’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding what to do on Calais beach. They’ll love exploring the outdoor playground, playing mini golf, and trying out the skate park, plus there’s plenty of paddling and sandcastle building opportunities too! Once they’re worn out from playing, treat them to a delicious ice cream from one of the seafront vendors – the perfect way to end a beach day!
4. Calais’ summer activity programme
Throughout the summer, Calais beach hosts a variety of activities as part of the city’s annual summer activity programme which you can take part in. Boasting everything from dance and fitness classes to mini festivals and craft stalls, and lots of great options for children too, you simply have to get involved if you spot something fun happening during your day on the beach.
5. Eating and drinking at Calais beach
As with many seaside destinations, Calais offers visitors an amazing selection of seafood in addition to many other French delicacies. If you can’t decide what to have, we recommend mussels in garlic with French fries – a meal that Calais is famed for! The beach itself is just 15 minutes from the centre by foot, so you can easily walk into the city where you’ll find a whole range of eating and drinking options to suit all tastes.
With so many great things to do on Calais beach, it really is the perfect place to visit for a day, or as a convenient stop-off on your way to or from the port – especially due to its free parking facilities.
