The Netherlands is a popular destination for fishing holidays thanks to its abundance of rivers, canals, deltas, and other numerous waterways. Here, we share our top tips for fishing in Amsterdam so you can make the most out of your trip.
What is a VISpas?
A VISpas is the permit that you’ll require in order to go fishing in the Netherlands, including Amsterdam. The pass is credit card sized and can be purchased from tackle shops in Amsterdam or online before you travel. When you have a VISpas, you’ll be allowed to fish with two rods in a whole range of locations which can be found using the VISplanner app. This app tells you where you’re allowed to fish with your specific VISpas and will help you to angle within the Netherlands’ regulations. You’ll also be given a booklet containing this information when you purchase your fishing permit.
Why go fishing in Amsterdam?
Like the rest of the Netherlands, there are great fishing opportunities to be had in Amsterdam all year round. With plenty of canals to choose from, you’re sure to be spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting your spot for the day. A great option for those who want to try out a spot of street fishing during their break, Amsterdam is a great destination for both beginners and advanced anglers.
If you’d prefer a fishing tour, you’ll find a number of these in Amsterdam too. For example, A Day Fishing offers workshops and fishing trips with a licensed fishing guide. Choose from a half or full day of fishing and learn the best techniques for fishing in Amsterdam.
Where should I go fishing in Amsterdam?
The IJ and the North Sea Canal are popular fishing spots in Amsterdam thanks to how central they are and the number of fish they’re home to. A great choice for those hoping to catch zander and perch, plus roach, pike, and bream, these waters are full of the fish that those angling in the Netherlands can come to expect. Of course, the canals that branch off from these larger waterways are home to plenty of fish too, so you’re sure to find success wherever to set up. Just remember to check that you choose somewhere that’s covered by your VISpas.
What bait is acceptable when fishing in Amsterdam?
Wherever you’re fishing in the Netherlands you’ll need to be wary of the bait you’re using as there are rules you must follow. Accepted bait in the Netherlands include:
- Potato, bread, and dough
- Cheese, seeds, and corn
- Worms and prawns
- Insects and larvae
- Imitations up to 25mm in size
However, between the 1st April and the last Saturday in May you cannot use the following as bait:
- Real or imitation worms
- Bait fish
- Chunks of fish
This falls in line with the dates that you aren’t allowed to fish for zander or perch as it’s during this time that they reproduce. You cannot fish for pike between the 1st March and the last Saturday in May. Should you catch any of these fish during these dates you must carefully release them back into the water unharmed and as quickly as possible. If you catch a fish during these dates and are unsure of what species it is, you should release it just in case.
