The water remains relatively flat, though a north-easterly wind brings stronger breaks. More experienced surfers may want to check local weather reports before setting off, or head further south towards the less sheltered waters of Caen.

One of the top rated surf spots in Europe, Portrush is home to both multiple surf schools and some of the best waves in Northern Ireland. Mid to high tide brings a fantastic atmosphere, with surfers of all abilities flocking to the two long, sandy beaches for the best swell. Once you’ve had your fill of waves, you can continue along the Portrush coastline to Dunluce Castle and the Giant’s Causeway.

With plenty of fantastic beaches to choose from, Bundoran is a great location to find a peaceful spot during the busier summer months. Tullan has some of the most consistent breaks in the region, while Rossnowlagh is a more mellow choice for beginners. Experienced surfers can head to more challenging waters further south at Main Beach or The Peak. You’ll also find plenty of surf schools along the Bundoran coast, so be sure to check them out when you get a ferry to Ireland.

Best surf spot in Belgium: Ostend surrounds
Conditions along the exposed Ostend coastline are often inconsistent, ranging from completely flat shores to rough breaks. While it’s probably not the best place for beginners, practised surfers can generally find good surf at all tides. Check the weather report for north-westerly winds before you head down the 20km stretch south to the beaches of Mariakerke, Westende and Oostduinkerke during your surfing trip to Belgium.

With fantastic conditions throughout the year and plenty of instructors to choose from, Scheveningen is considered the best spot for surfing in Holland. An artificial reef ensures more challenging waves even in mellower tides.
