Few cities in the world boast a centre so exemplary that the entire area has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But Bruges is one of those majestic places that is truly one-of-a-kind, with its perfectly preserved medieval facades, traditional horses and carts that parade the cobbled Market Square, and winding canals that carry visitors to hidden wonders.
Whether you’re going for the first time or simply want to see your favourite holiday destination in a whole new light, here’s why you should visit Bruges in 2019.
1. Celebrate the Bruges Beer Festival 2019
Beer and Belgium go hand-in-hand – so much so that UNESCO added “Belgian beer culture” to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016. And what better way to celebrate this feat than at the Bruges Beer Festival 2019? Taking place on the weekend of 2-3 February, the event gathers 80 of the nation’s best breweries under the watchful eye of its belfry to serve up over 350 unique beers. We recommend choosing accommodation close to the city centre and enjoying a lazy morning sampling fresh crêpes and waffles.
2. Visit Bruges for the perfect weekend away
If you want to enjoy the sights of a typical Belgian holiday without the crowds, consider travelling between January and March for a much quieter experience. The colder months give Bruges a majestic quality, while the cosy warmth of a Trappist bar will seem all the more enticing after a morning exploring the chilly streets. Walk up the 366 steps to the top of the belfry, watch master chocolatiers at work, enjoy a choice of the very best restaurants, and have the city’s famous breweries and galleries all to yourself. Not sure how to cram it all in? We’ve set out your Bruges weekend itinerary here.
3. Experience heaven on earth at Bach Academy Bruges 2019
For the last seven years, Bruges has hosted this major classical music event to celebrate the work of the German composer. Through a series of performances, talks and screenings, this year’s Bach Academy Bruges Festival focuses on the theme of “Heaven on Earth”. Musicians and academics from across the world will bring the eclectic programme to life, which runs between 15-20 January. The full list of events and tickets can be found on the official website.
4. You’ll find a museum to suit every taste
What connects chips, beer, art and chocolate? Well, aside from being famous products of this delectable Belgian city, you’ll also find a museum dedicated to each one in Bruges. As well as learning the fascinating history behind these topics, you’ll find plenty of mementoes to take home – not to mention more than a few stories. There are 14 museums in Bruges that are run by the city, as well as many smaller, privately owned collections that are also open to the public.
