Covering 191 hectares, this park offers plenty to do for families, from walking trails and treasure hunts to orienteering and geocaching – there’s certainly lots to discover. As you explore the park, you’ll see original features from when it was part of Sir and Lady Dixon’s estate, including an ice house and lime kilns, which will give you a fascinating glimpse into the past. There’s also a 9-hole golf course which is suitable for everyone from beginners to experts, so the whole family can get involved.

One of the highlights of Carnfunnock Country Park is the Carnfunnock Maze. The maze is the result of a design competition held in 1985, and is shaped to look like Northern Ireland. It consists of over 1500 hornbeam plants, and as these can live for up to 150 years it is hoped that the maze will be around for future generations to enjoy too. Another must-see attraction in Carnfunnock Country Park is the Walled Garden. Boasting a number of different gardens within it, you can expect to see fish and fountains, exquisite sundials, and unique wooden sundials as you walk around. Northern Ireland is full of natural wonders, and Glenoe waterfall is certainly one of them. Located just 10 minutes from the centre of Larne by car, the 30 foot waterfall is owned by the National Trust and can be accessed from its convenient car park. The walk to Glencoe waterfall is steep and includes a number of steps, but as long as you are all prepared to tackle the winding paths it’s a great adventure to be had near Larne as a family. The walk is a circular one and is approximately a mile in length, offering different views of the waterfall as you head around the loop. You’re all sure to be delighted as you first glimpse the waterfall due to how picturesque it is, and there are lots of great photo opportunities to be had – especially from the bridge.

The walk is wet underfoot due to being set in a gorge, so practical shoes are a must, and it isn’t uncommon for visitors to encounter some spray from the falls too. Anti-slip steps and handrails are in place, so you can feel confident walking here despite it being slippery at times. Keep your eye out for the fairy houses hidden among the rocks by the National Trust, they’re a real treat for children to discover during your visit. Glenoe waterfall is particularly impressive after it has rained, so don’t necessarily wish for amazing weather if you want to see this attraction at its most magical. Once you’ve completed the walk and taken lots of photos, head back to the car park where you can enjoy a snack at one of the picnic benches. Alternatively, make your way up the sleep climb to St. Columbas Church which offers incredible views across the valley from its graveyard.

Located less than half an hour from Larne by car, Belfast Zoo is home to over 120 species – so you’re sure to find your favourite animal here! See flamingos, penguins, lizards, snakes, and tortoises during your visit, and learn a little about each one as you make your way around the zoo.
