1. Catch waves in Cap Gris-Nez: 15.2 miles from Calais
Located just a 30-minute drive from the heart of the city of Calais, craggy Cap Gris-Nez boasts swelling waves that make it the ideal base for surfing in France. It’s one of the best spots on the north-east coastline for catching winds from the south. These drafts generate crests of over three metres in height, which makes it especially popular with seasoned surfers. Surfing is best around mid-tide, but do beware of hazards including rips, rocks, strong currents and cliffs. Best of all is the view. On a clear day, you’ll be able to see across the Channel to the iconic White Cliffs of Dover from this unique surfing spot.
2. Surf in Wimereux: 19.8 miles from Calais
Once your ferry docks at the port of Calais, it takes just 30 minutes to drive to the coastal town of Wimereux – a spot famous for surfing in France. Wimereux provides easy surfing, with medium waves breaking on the main beach thanks to light south-westerly winds. The western orientation of breezy Pointe des Oies in Wimereux makes this reef a real wave magnet, with airstreams perfect for kitesurfing too. At the headland, visitors are treated to a stunning natural setting – you can spot seals and other marine life, as well as the English coast when visibility is good. The ancient town of Boulogne is a short 15-minute drive away if you fancy a change of scenery.
3. Surfing in Malo les Bains: 21.8 miles from Calais
With a handful of surf shops and its very own kitesurfing school, the sought after seaside resort Malo les Bains is another exceptional spot for surfing, kitesurfing, and bodyboarding in France. As well as being a haven for water sports, the glorious 4km expanse of sandy beach lapping the choppy North Sea boasts amazing historical connotations, having been one of the sites of Operation Dynamo in 1940. Make Malo les Bains your base if you fancy seeing Lille, one of France’s major cities in France, which is just an hour away by car.
