Benefits of ferry travel for overseas property owners

Benefits of Ferry Travel for Overseas Property Owners

If you have a second home in mainland Europe, you’ll find that travelling there by ferry comes with lots of advantages. From being able to pack all you can fit into your car to taking your pet along for the trip, here are just some of the benefits of ferry travel for overseas property owners.

Unlimited luggage allowance

One of the greatest benefits of ferry travel for overseas property owners is that you can pack as much as you can fit into your car. We have an unlimited luggage allowance at P&O Ferries, so the only restriction you’ll face is the size of your vehicle! This is really useful if you have large items that you want to take to your overseas property with you as transporting these by air could get quite pricey. Plus, you’ll know that your luggage won’t be at risk of damage or getting lost as it won’t leave the safety of your car.

Travel with your pet

Taking a pet to your holiday home

If your overseas property just doesn’t feel like home without your pet, choose to travel by ferry and you can take your furry friend with you. On our Dover to Calais and Cairnryan to Larne crossings, your dog, cat, or ferret can stay in your vehicle while you enjoy the onboard facilities, whereas your pet will have a spot in our onboard kennels when you travel on our Hull to Rotterdam route. Unfortunately, we are unable to take pets on our Liverpool to Dublin ferries, but our Cairnryan to Larne option offers a potential alternative.

Take your bike

Cycling offers a lovely way to explore during a break, and when you travel to your second home with P&O Ferries you can take your bike with you. Whether you want to use your bike to get to the nearest town, or simply for a bit of exercise while you’re away, taking your own bike with you means that you won’t have the hassle of renting one when you get there. Plus, if you’re an avid cyclist you can take all the kit you need thanks to our unlimited luggage allowance, so pack your cleats, helmet, and all the Lycra you could possibly need!

Can I travel to my overseas property?

Visiting overseas property after Brexit

In line with UK government COVID-19 restrictions, you can travel to your overseas property in Europe as long as it is in connection with the purchase, sale, letting, or rental of your home. This could include visiting estate agents, viewing properties that you might like to purchase, or getting your home ready for new tenants. Travel restrictions have been changing frequently during the coronavirus pandemic, so ensure that you check the latest guidance for the country you’re travelling to before organising your trip.

Travelling to your second home after Brexit

Following Brexit, those with a second home in the EU won’t be able to spend any longer than 90 days at their overseas property during any 180-day period without a visa. This is regardless of how many trips you take and when the start and end dates of these trips are. It’s important to keep this in mind when planning your holiday home vacations to ensure that you remain within these new Brexit guidelines.
